vibhūtiyoga

śloka 1

śrībhagavānuvāca |

bhūya eva mahābāho śṛṇu me paramaṃ vacaḥ |

yatte'haṃ prīyamāṇāya vakṣyāmi hitakāmyayā ||10-1||

śrī bhagavānuvāca

Translation

The blessed Bhagavan said: O mighty-armed one! Listen again to My supreme words, which I shall speak to you who hold Me in the highest affection, desiring your welfare.

vibhūtiyoga

śloka 2

na me viduḥ suragaṇāḥ prabhavaṃ na maharṣayaḥ |

ahamādirhi devānāṃ maharṣīṇāṃ ca sarvaśaḥ ||10-2||

Translation

Neither the hosts of devas nor the great sages know My origin; for I am in every way the primal cause of the devas and the great sages as well.

vibhūtiyoga

śloka 3

yo māmajamanādiṃ ca vetti lokamaheśvaram |

asammūḍhaḥ sa martyeṣu sarvapāpaiḥ pramucyate ||10-3||

Translation

He who knows Me as unborn, beginningless, and the great Lord of the worlds—such a person free from delusion among mortal men is liberated from all sins.

vibhūtiyoga

śloka 4 and 5

buddhirjñānamasammohaḥ kṣamā satyaṃ damaḥ śamaḥ |

sukhaṃ duḥkhaṃ bhavo'bhāvo bhayaṃ cābhayameva ca ||10-4||

ahiṃsā samatā tuṣṭistapo dānaṃ yaśo'yaśaḥ |

bhavanti bhāvā bhūtānāṃ matta eva pṛthagvidhāḥ ||10-5||

Translation

Intellect, knowledge, absence of delusion, forbearance, truth, restraint of the senses (dama), restraint of the mind (shama), pleasure, pain, birth and death, fear and fearlessness. Non-violence, equanimity, contentment, austerity, charity, fame and infamy—these various states of beings arise from Me alone.

vibhūtiyoga

śloka 6

maharṣayaḥ sapta pūrve catvāro manavastathā |

madbhāvā mānasā jātā yeṣāṃ loka imāḥ prajāḥ ||10-6||

Translation

The seven great sages, the four (Sanaka and the like) of ancient times, and the fourteen Manus—these have arisen from My will, endowed with My power; this creation in the world is theirs.

vibhūtiyoga

śloka 7

etāṃ vibhūtiṃ yogaṃ ca mama yo vetti tattvataḥ |

so'vikampena yogena yujyate nātra saṃśayaḥ ||10-7||

Translation

He who knows this My glory and Yoga in truth becomes united with the unshakable Yoga (that is, steady meditation Yoga); of this there is no doubt whatsoever.

vibhūtiyoga

śloka 8

ahaṃ sarvasya prabhavo mattaḥ sarvaṃ pravartate |

iti matvā bhajante māṃ budhā bhāvasamanvitāḥ ||10-8||

Translation

I alone am the source of all; from Me alone does all (the world) attain expansion—knowing thus, the wise, endowed with devotion, worship Me alone.

vibhūtiyoga

śloka 9

maccittā madgataprāṇā bodhayantaḥ parasparam |

kathayantaśca māṃ nityaṃ tuṣyanti ca ramanti ca ||10-9||

Translation

Those devotees who fix their minds on Me alone and offer their vital breaths (and senses) to Me, ever enlightening one another about Me and speaking of Me alone, are content and delight.

vibhūtiyoga

śloka 10

teṣāṃ satatayuktānāṃ bhajatāṃ prītipūrvakam |

dadāmi buddhiyogaṃ taṃ yena māmupayānti te ||10-10||

Translation

To those devotees who are ever united with Me and worship Me with love, I give that 'Yoga of the intellect' by which they attain Me.

vibhūtiyoga

śloka 11

teṣāmevānukampārthamahamajñānajaṃ tamaḥ |

nāśayāmyātmabhāvastho jñānadīpena bhāsvatā ||10-11||

Translation

To bestow grace upon them, I dwell in their hearts and destroy the darkness born of ignorance with the lamp of luminous knowledge.

vibhūtiyoga

śloka 12 and 13

arjuna uvāca |

paraṃ brahma paraṃ dhāma pavitraṃ paramaṃ bhavān |

puruṣaṃ śāśvataṃ divyamādidevamajaṃ vibhum ||10-12||

āhustvāmṛṣayaḥ sarve devarṣirnāradastathā |

asito devalo vyāsaḥ svayaṃ caiva bravīṣi me ||10-13||

arjuna uvāca

Translation

Arjuna said: You are the supreme Brahman, the supreme abode and the supreme purifier; the eternal divine Person, the primal deva of even the devas, birthless and all-pervading. Thus do all the sages speak of You; so too the divine sage Narada, Asita, Devala the sage, and Vyasa, and You Yourself also say to me.

vibhūtiyoga

śloka 14

sarvametadṛtaṃ manye yanmāṃ vadasi keśava |

na hi te bhagavanvyaktiṃ vidurdevā na dānavāḥ ||10-14||

Translation

O Keshava! Whatever You say to me, I hold all of it to be true. O Bhagavan, neither the devas nor the danavas know Your (true) form.

vibhūtiyoga

śloka 15

svayamevātmanātmānaṃ vettha tvaṃ puruṣottama |

bhūtabhāvana bhūteśa devadeva jagatpate ||10-15||

Translation

O Purushottama! O origin of beings! O Lord of beings! O deva of devas! O Lord of the world! You alone know Yourself.

vibhūtiyoga

śloka 16

vaktumarhasyaśeṣeṇa divyā hyātmavibhūtayaḥ |

yābhirvibhūtibhirlokānimāṃstvaṃ vyāpya tiṣṭhasi ||10-16||

Translation

You alone are fit to describe those Your divine glories in full, by which You pervade and abide in all these worlds.

vibhūtiyoga

śloka 17

kathaṃ vidyāmahaṃ yogiṃstvāṃ sadā paricintayan |

keṣu keṣu ca bhāveṣu cintyo'si bhagavanmayā ||10-17||

Translation

O Lord of Yoga! How am I to know You through constant contemplation, and O Bhagavan! In what forms are You to be contemplated by me?

vibhūtiyoga

śloka 18

vistareṇātmano yogaṃ vibhūtiṃ ca janārdana |

bhūyaḥ kathaya tṛptirhi śṛṇvato nāsti me'mṛtam ||10-18||

Translation

O Janardana! Speak again in detail of Your Yoga power and divine glory, for I am not satiated hearing Your nectar-like words.

vibhūtiyoga

śloka 19

śrībhagavānuvāca |

hanta te kathayiṣyāmi divyā hyātmavibhūtayaḥ |

prādhānyataḥ kuruśreṣṭha nāstyanto vistarasya me ||10-19||

śrī bhagavānuvāca

Translation

The blessed Bhagavan said: Well then, I shall now speak to you of My divine glories in their principal aspects. O best of the Kurus, My manifestation has no end.

vibhūtiyoga

śloka 20

ahamātmā guḍākeśa sarvabhūtāśayasthitaḥ |

ahamādiśca madhyaṃ ca bhūtānāmanta eva ca ||10-20||

Translation

O Gudakesha (conqueror of sleep)! I am the Atman dwelling in the hearts of all beings, and I am the beginning, middle and end of all beings.

vibhūtiyoga

śloka 21

ādityānāmahaṃ viṣṇurjyotiṣāṃ raviraṃśumān |

marīcirmarutāmasmi nakṣatrāṇāmahaṃ śaśī ||10-21||

Translation

Among the twelve Adityas I am Vishnu, and among the luminaries I am the radiant Sun; among the forty-nine Maruts (wind deities) I am Marichi, and among the stars I am the Moon (Shashi).

vibhūtiyoga

śloka 22

vedānāṃ sāmavedo'smi devānāmasmi vāsavaḥ |

indriyāṇāṃ manaścāsmi bhūtānāmasmi cetanā ||10-22||

Translation

Among the Vedas I am the Sama Veda, among the devas I am Vasava (Indra); among the senses I am the mind, and among embodied beings I am consciousness (the power of knowledge).

vibhūtiyoga

śloka 23

rudrāṇāṃ śaṅkaraścāsmi vitteśo yakṣarakṣasām |

vasūnāṃ pāvakaścāsmi meruḥ śikhariṇāmaham ||10-23||

Translation

Among the eleven Rudras I am Shankara, and among the Yakshas and Rakshasas I am the lord of wealth Kubera (Vittesha); among the eight Vasus I am Agni, and among the peaked mountains I am Meru.

vibhūtiyoga

śloka 24

purodhasāṃ ca mukhyaṃ māṃ viddhi pārtha bṛhaspatim |

senānīnāmahaṃ skandaḥ sarasāmasmi sāgaraḥ ||10-24||

Translation

O Partha! Know Me as Brihaspati among the priests; I am Skanda among the army commanders and the ocean among bodies of water.

vibhūtiyoga

śloka 25

maharṣīṇāṃ bhṛgurahaṃ girāmasmyekamakṣaram |

yajñānāṃ japayajño'smi sthāvarāṇāṃ himālayaḥ ||10-25||

Translation

Among the great sages I am Bhrigu, and among words I am the single-syllable Om. Among sacrifices I am the sacrifice of japa, and among the immovable I am the Himalayas.

vibhūtiyoga

śloka 26 and 27

aśvatthaḥ sarvavṛkṣāṇāṃ devarṣīṇāṃ ca nāradaḥ |

gandharvāṇāṃ citrarathaḥ siddhānāṃ kapilo muniḥ ||10-26||

uccaiḥśravasamaśvānāṃ viddhi māmamṛtodbhavam |

airāvataṃ gajendrāṇāṃ narāṇāṃ ca narādhipam ||10-27||

Translation

Among all trees I am the Ashvattha (peepal), and among the divine sages I am Narada; among the Gandharvas I am Chitraratha, and among the Siddhas I am the sage Kapila. Among horses know Me as the horse Uchchaishrava born of nectar; among elephants as Airavata, and among men as the king.

vibhūtiyoga

śloka 28 and 29

āyudhānāmahaṃ vajraṃ dhenūnāmasmi kāmadhuk |

prajanaścāsmi kandarpaḥ sarpāṇāmasmi vāsukiḥ ||10-28||

anantaścāsmi nāgānāṃ varuṇo yādasāmaham |

pitṝṇāmaryamā cāsmi yamaḥ saṃyamatāmaham ||10-29||

Translation

Among weapons I am the thunderbolt and among cows I am Kamadhenu; I am Kandarpa (Kamadeva), the cause of procreation, and among serpents I am Vasuki. Among the Nagas I am Ananta (Sheshanaga), and among water deities I am Varuna; among the ancestors I am Aryama, and among those who restrain I am Yama.

vibhūtiyoga

śloka 30

prahlādaścāsmi daityānāṃ kālaḥ kalayatāmaham |

mṛgāṇāṃ ca mṛgendro'haṃ vainateyaśca pakṣiṇām ||10-30||

Translation

Among the Daityas I am Prahlada, and among those who count I am Kala; among beasts I am the lion (lord of animals), and among birds I am Garuda.

vibhūtiyoga

śloka 31

pavanaḥ pavatāmasmi rāmaḥ śastrabhṛtāmaham |

jhaṣāṇāṃ makaraścāsmi srotasāmasmi jāhnavī ||10-31||

Translation

Among purifiers I am the wind, and among wielders of weapons I am Rama; among aquatic creatures I am the crocodile, and among rivers I am the Ganga.

vibhūtiyoga

śloka 32

sargāṇāmādirantaśca madhyaṃ caivāhamarjuna |

adhyātmavidyā vidyānāṃ vādaḥ pravadatāmaham ||10-32||

Translation

O Arjuna! I alone am the beginning, end and middle of all creations; among the sciences I am the science of the Self, and among the types of debate I am vada (reasoned discourse).

vibhūtiyoga

śloka 33

akṣarāṇāmakāro'smi dvandvaḥ sāmāsikasya ca |

ahamevākṣayaḥ kālo dhātāhaṃ viśvatomukhaḥ ||10-33||

Translation

Among letters I am the letter 'a', and among compound words I am the dvandva compound; I am imperishable Time and the all-facing Creator (the cosmic form).

vibhūtiyoga

śloka 34

mṛtyuḥ sarvaharaścāhamudbhavaśca bhaviṣyatām |

kīrtiḥ śrīrvākca nārīṇāṃ smṛtirmedhā dhṛtiḥ kṣamā ||10-34||

Translation

I am all-consuming Death and the cause of the birth of things yet to be; among feminine qualities I am fame, splendour, speech, memory, intelligence, fortitude and forbearance.

vibhūtiyoga

śloka 35

bṛhatsāma tathā sāmnāṃ gāyatrī chandasāmaham |

māsānāṃ mārgaśīrṣo'hamṛtūnāṃ kusumākaraḥ ||10-35||

Translation

Among the Samas (chanted mantras) I am the Brihatsama, and among metres I am the Gayatri metre; among months I am Margashirsha (the period of December-January) and among seasons I am spring.

vibhūtiyoga

śloka 36

dyūtaṃ chalayatāmasmi tejastejasvināmaham |

jayo'smi vyavasāyo'smi sattvaṃ sattvavatāmaham ||10-36||

Translation

Among deceivers I am gambling, and among the radiant I am splendour; I am victory; I am endeavour (enterprise), and I am the sattvic quality of sattvic persons.

vibhūtiyoga

śloka 37

vṛṣṇīnāṃ vāsudevo'smi pāṇḍavānāṃ dhanañjayaḥ |

munīnāmapyahaṃ vyāsaḥ kavīnāmuśanā kaviḥ ||10-37||

Translation

Among the Vrishnis I am Vasudeva, and among the Pandavas I am Dhananjaya; among the sages I am Vyasa, and among poets I am the poet Ushana.

vibhūtiyoga

śloka 38

daṇḍo damayatāmasmi nītirasmi jigīṣatām |

maunaṃ caivāsmi guhyānāṃ jñānaṃ jñānavatāmaham ||10-38||

Translation

Among those who punish I am the rod, and among those who seek victory I am policy; among secrets I am silence, and among the wise I am knowledge.

vibhūtiyoga

śloka 39

yaccāpi sarvabhūtānāṃ bījaṃ tadahamarjuna |

na tadasti vinā yatsyānmayā bhūtaṃ carācaram ||10-39||

Translation

O Arjuna! I am also the seed (cause) of the origin of all beings, for there is no moving or unmoving being that exists without Me.

vibhūtiyoga

śloka 40

nānto'sti mama divyānāṃ vibhūtīnāṃ parantapa |

eṣa tūddeśataḥ prokto vibhūtervistaro mayā ||10-40||

Translation

O Parantapa! My divine glories have no end; I have spoken this expansion of My glories only in brief.

vibhūtiyoga

śloka 41

yadyadvibhūtimatsattvaṃ śrīmadūrjitameva vā |

tattadevāvagaccha tvaṃ mama tejoṃ'śasambhavam ||10-41||

Translation

Whatever being or object is endowed with glory, splendour or power—know that to have arisen from a fraction of My radiance alone.

vibhūtiyoga

śloka 42

athavā bahunaitena kiṃ jñātena tavārjuna |

viṣṭabhyāhamidaṃ kṛtsnamekāṃśena sthito jagat ||10-42||

Translation

Or what need have you, O Arjuna, to know so much? I sustain this entire world by a mere fraction of Myself.

oṃ tatsaditi śrīmadbhagavadgītā supaniṣatsu brahmavidyām yogaśāstre śrīkṛṣṇārjunasaṃvade vibhūtiyogo nāma daśamo'dhyāyaḥ
