daivāsurasampadvibhāgayoga

śloka 1, 2 and 3

śrībhagavānuvāca |

abhayaṃ sattvasaṃśuddhirjñānayogavyavasthitiḥ |

dānaṃ damaśca yajñaśca svādhyāyastapa ārjavam ||16-1||

ahiṃsā satyamakrodhastyāgaḥ śāntirapaiśunam |

dayā bhūteṣvaloluptvaṃ mārdavaṃ hrīracāpalam ||16-2||

tejaḥ kṣamā dhṛtiḥ śaucamadroho nātimānitā |

bhavanti sampadaṃ daivīmabhijātasya bhārata ||16-3||

śrī bhagavānuvāca

Translation

Sri Bhagavan said: Fearlessness, purity of heart, steadfastness in knowledge-Yoga, charity, self-restraint, sacrifice, self-study, austerity and straightforwardness. Non-violence, truth, absence of anger, renunciation, peace, refraining from slander (not speaking ill of others), compassion toward all beings, absence of greed, gentleness, modesty, steadiness. O Bharata! Splendour, forgiveness, fortitude, purity, absence of malice and absence of arrogance—these are all the marks of one who has attained divine wealth.

śloka 4

dambho darpo'bhimānaśca krodhaḥ pāruṣyameva ca |

ajñānaṃ cābhijātasya pārtha sampadamāsurīm ||16-4||

Translation

O Partha! Hypocrisy, arrogance, pride, anger, harsh speech and ignorance—these are all demonic wealth.

śloka 5

daivī sampadvimokṣāya nibandhāyāsurī matā |

mā śucaḥ sampadaṃ daivīmabhijāto'si pāṇḍava ||16-5||

Translation

O Pandava! Divine wealth is considered to lead to liberation and demonic wealth to bondage; do not grieve, for you have attained divine wealth.

daivāsurasampadvibhāgayoga

śloka 6

dvau bhūtasargau loke'smindaiva āsura eva ca |

daivo vistaraśaḥ prokta āsuraṃ pārtha me śṛṇu ||16-6||

Translation

O Partha! In this world there are two kinds of beings created—the divine and the demonic. The nature of the divine has been described at length; now hear from Me the nature of the demonic in detail.

śloka 7

pravṛttiṃ ca nivṛttiṃ ca janā na vidurāsurāḥ |

na śaucaṃ nāpi cācāro na satyaṃ teṣu vidyate ||16-7||

Translation

Those of demonic nature know neither right action nor renunciation; in them there is neither purity, nor good conduct, nor truth.

śloka 8

asatyamapratiṣṭhaṃ te jagadāhuranīśvaram |

aparasparasambhūtaṃ kimanyatkāmahaitukam ||16-8||

Translation

They say that this world is without support, unreal and godless; it has arisen from the mutual union of desire between man and woman, and what else could be its cause?

daivāsurasampadvibhāgayoga

śloka 9

etāṃ dṛṣṭimavaṣṭabhya naṣṭātmāno'lpabuddhayaḥ |

prabhavantyugrakarmāṇaḥ kṣayāya jagato'hitāḥ ||16-9||

Translation

Holding this view, those of degraded nature, of little intellect, performing terrible deeds, arise as enemies of the world, bent on destroying it.

śloka 10

kāmamāśritya duṣpūraṃ dambhamānamadānvitāḥ |

mohādgṛhītvāsadgrāhānpravartante'śucivratāḥ ||16-10||

Translation

Endowed with hypocrisy, arrogance and pride, holding to insatiable desires, deluded they adopt false beliefs—these people of impure resolve act in the world.

śloka 11 and 12

cintāmaparimeyāṃ ca pralayāntāmupāśritāḥ |

kāmopabhogaparamā etāvaditi niścitāḥ ||16-11||

āśāpāśaśatairbaddhāḥ kāmakrodhaparāyaṇāḥ |

īhante kāmabhogārthamanyāyenārthasañcayān ||16-12||

Translation

Oppressed by boundless cares lasting until death, regarding enjoyment of sense-objects as the supreme goal—these demonic people are of the firm conviction that "this alone (is truth, happiness)". Bound by hundreds of bonds of hope, under the sway of desire and anger, these people strive to amass wealth unjustly for the fulfilment of sense-enjoyments.

śloka 13, 14, 15, 16

idamadya mayā labdhamimaṃ prāpsye manoratham |

idamastīdamapi me bhaviṣyati punardhanam ||16-13||

asau mayā hataḥ śatrurhaniṣye cāparānapi |

īśvaro'hamahaṃ bhogī siddho'haṃ balavānsukhī ||16-14||

āḍhyo'bhijanavānasmi ko'nyo'sti sadṛśo mayā |

yakṣye dāsyāmi modiṣya ityajñānavimohitāḥ ||16-15||

anekacittavibhrāntā mohajālasamāvṛtāḥ |

prasaktāḥ kāmabhogeṣu patanti narake'śucau ||16-16||

Translation

"I have gained this today, and I shall also attain this desire; I have this much wealth, and still more will be mine in the future." "This enemy has been slain by me, and I shall slay the others too"; "I am the Lord and the enjoyer"; "I am the accomplished one"; "I am powerful and happy." "I am wealthy and born in an exalted family. Who else is equal to me?"; "I shall perform sacrifice"; "I shall give charity"; "I shall enjoy"—thus deluded by ignorance are they. With minds bewildered in many ways, caught in the net of delusion and attached to sense-enjoyments, these people fall into foul and terrible hell.

daivāsurasampadvibhāgayoga

śloka 17

ātmasambhāvitāḥ stabdhā dhanamānamadānvitāḥ |

yajante nāmayajñaiste dambhenāvidhipūrvakam ||16-17||

Translation

Considering themselves superior, stubborn and proud, intoxicated with wealth and honour, such people perform sacrifice hypocritically through mere nominal rites, without following scriptural injunctions.

śloka 18

ahaṃkāraṃ balaṃ darpaṃ kāmaṃ krodhaṃ ca saṃśritāḥ |

māmātmaparadeheṣu pradviṣanto'bhyasūyakāḥ ||16-18||

Translation

Overpowered by ego, strength, arrogance, desire and anger, slandering others, these people harbour hatred toward Me (the Paramatman) dwelling in their own bodies and in those of others.

śloka 19

tānahaṃ dviṣataḥ krurānsaṃsāreṣu narādhamān |

kṣipāmyajasramaśubhānāsurīṣveva yoniṣu ||16-19||

Translation

Such haters, perpetrators of cruel deeds and vilest of men—I cast them again and again into demonic wombs in the world, that is, I cause them to be born thus.

daivāsurasampadvibhāgayoga

śloka 20

āsurīṃ yonimāpannā mūḍhā janmani janmani |

māmaprāpyaiva kaunteya tato yāntyadhamāṃ gatim ||16-20||

Translation

O Kaunteya! Those deluded persons attain demonic wombs birth after birth and, thus not attaining Me, reach the lowest state.

daivāsurasampadvibhāgayoga

śloka 21

trividhaṃ narakasyedaṃ dvāraṃ nāśanamātmanaḥ |

kāmaḥ krodhastathā lobhastasmādetattrayaṃ tyajet ||16-21||

Translation

Desire, anger and greed—these are the threefold gates to self-destruction; therefore these three should be abandoned.

śloka 22

etairvimuktaḥ kaunteya tamodvāraistribhirnaraḥ |

ācaratyātmanaḥ śreyastato yāti parāṃ gatim ||16-22||

Translation

O Kaunteya! The person freed from these three gates of hell practises the means of his own welfare and thus attains the supreme goal.

daivāsurasampadvibhāgayoga

śloka 23

yaḥ śāstravidhimutsṛjya vartate kāmakārataḥ |

na sa siddhimavāpnoti na sukhaṃ na parāṃ gatim ||16-23||

Translation

The person who, abandoning scriptural injunctions, acts only impelled by his own desire attains neither perfection, nor happiness, nor the supreme goal.

śloka 24

tasmācchāstraṃ pramāṇaṃ te kāryākāryavyavasthitau |

jñātvā śāstravidhānoktaṃ karma kartumihārhasi ||16-24||

Translation

Therefore, for you the scripture alone is the authority in determining duty and non-duty; knowing the injunctions laid down in the scripture, you should perform your actions.

oṃ tatsaditi śrīmadbhagavadgītā supaniṣatsu brahmavidyām yogaśāstre śrīkṛṣṇārjunasaṃvade daivasurasaṃpādasvayaugo nāma ṣoḍaśo'dhyāyaḥ
