bhaktiyoga

śloka 1

arjuna uvāca |

evaṃ satatayuktā ye bhaktāstvāṃ paryupāsate |

ye cāpyakṣaramavyaktaṃ teṣāṃ ke yogavittamāḥ ||12-1||

arjuna uvāca

Translation

Arjuna said: Of those devotees who worship You thus (as described) with constant devotion, and those who worship the unmanifest and the imperishable—which of these two is the better knower of Yoga?

bhaktiyoga

śloka 2

śrībhagavānuvāca |

mayyāveśya mano ye māṃ nityayuktā upāsate |

śraddhayā parayopetāḥ te me yuktatamā matāḥ ||12-2||

śrī bhagavānuvāca

Translation

The blessed Bhagavan said: Those devotees who, fixing their minds on Me, being ever united with Me, worship Me with supreme faith—they are, in My view, the highest, that is, the best.

bhaktiyoga

śloka 3 and 4

ye tvakṣaramanirdeśyamavyaktaṃ paryupāsate |

sarvatragamacintyañca kūṭasthamacalandhruvam ||12-3||

sanniyamyendriyagrāmaṃ sarvatra samabuddhayaḥ |

te prāpnuvanti māmeva sarvabhūtahite ratāḥ ||12-4||

Translation

Swami Tejomayananda did not comment on this sloka Having properly restrained the host of senses, being equanimous towards all, and devoted to the welfare of all beings—those devotees attain Me alone.

bhaktiyoga

śloka 5

kleśo'dhikatarasteṣāmavyaktāsaktacetasām |

avyaktā hi gatirduḥkhaṃ dehavadbhiravāpyate ||12-5||

Translation

But those whose minds are attached to the unmanifest experience greater difficulty, for the path to the unmanifest is attained with difficulty by embodied beings.

bhaktiyoga

śloka 6 and 7

ye tu sarvāṇi karmāṇi mayi saṃnyasya matparaḥ |

ananyenaiva yogena māṃ dhyāyanta upāsate ||12-6||

teṣāmahaṃ samuddhartā mṛtyusaṃsārasāgarāt |

bhavāmi nacirātpārtha mayyāveśitacetasām ||12-7||

Translation

But those devotees who, regarding Me alone as the supreme goal, offer all actions to Me and meditate on Me (the qualified form) alone through single-minded Yoga. O Partha! For those devotees whose minds are fixed on Me alone, I become the one who swiftly delivers them from the ocean of transmigration in the form of death.

bhaktiyoga

śloka 8

mayyeva mana ādhatsva mayi buddhiṃ niveśaya |

nivasiṣyasi mayyeva ata ūrdhvaṃ na saṃśayaḥ ||12-8||

Translation

Fix your mind and intellect on Me alone; thereafter you shall dwell in Me alone—of this there is no doubt.

śloka 9

atha cittaṃ samādhātuṃ na śaknoṣi mayi sthiram |

abhyāsayogena tato māmicchāptuṃ dhanañjaya ||12-9||

Translation

O Dhananjaya! If you are unable to fix your mind on Me, then strive to attain Me through the Yoga of practice.

bhaktiyoga

śloka 10

abhyāse'pyasamartho'si matkarmaparamo bhava |

madarthamapi karmāṇi kurvansiddhimavāpsyasi ||12-10||

Translation

If you are unable even to practise, then be devoted to My work; thus, performing actions for Me, you shall attain perfection.

bhaktiyoga

śloka 11

athaitadapyaśakto'si kartuṃ madyogamāśritaḥ |

sarvakarmaphalatyāgaṃ tataḥ kuru yatātmavān ||12-11||

Translation

And if you are unable to do even this, then, being endowed with self-restraint, take refuge in the Yoga that is the means of attaining Me, and renounce the fruits of all actions.

bhaktiyoga

śloka 12

śreyo hi jñānamabhyāsājjñānāddhyānaṃ viśiṣyate |

dhyānātkarmaphalatyāgastyāgācchāntiranantaram ||12-12||

Translation

Knowledge is superior to practice; meditation is superior to knowledge; and renunciation of the fruits of action is superior to meditation; from renunciation, peace is attained immediately.

śloka 13 and 14

adveṣṭā sarvabhūtānāṃ maitraḥ karuṇa eva ca |

nirmamo nirahaṅkāraḥ samaduḥkhasukhaḥ kṣamī ||12-13||

santuṣṭaḥ satataṃ yogī yatātmā dṛḍhaniścayaḥ |

mayyarpitamanobuddhiryo madbhaktaḥ sa me priyaḥ ||12-14||

Translation

He who is free from hatred toward all beings, who is a friend to all and compassionate; who is free from possessiveness and ego, equal in pleasure and pain, and forbearing. That self-restrained yogi of firm resolve who is ever content, who has offered his mind and intellect to Me—such a devotee of Mine is dear to Me.

bhaktiyoga

śloka 15

yasmānnodvijate loko lokānnodvijate ca yaḥ |

harṣāmarṣabhayodvegairmukto yaḥ sa ca me priyaḥ ||12-15||

Translation

He by whom no being (that is, any person) is agitated and who himself is not agitated by anyone, and who is free from joy, intolerance, fear and agitation—that devotee is dear to Me.

bhaktiyoga

śloka 16

anapekṣaḥ śucirdakṣa udāsīno gatavyathaḥ |

sarvārambhaparityāgī yo madbhaktaḥ sa me priyaḥ ||12-16||

Translation

He who is My devotee—free from expectation, pure, skilful, indifferent, free from distress, and renouncing all actions—is dear to Me.

bhaktiyoga

śloka 17

yo na hṛṣyati na dveṣṭi na śocati na kāṅkṣati |

śubhāśubhaparityāgī bhaktimānyaḥ sa me priyaḥ ||12-17||

Translation

He who neither rejoices nor hates; who neither grieves nor desires; and who renounces both the auspicious and the inauspicious—that devotee is dear to Me.

bhaktiyoga

śloka 18 and 19

samaḥ śatrau ca mitre ca tathā mānāpamānayoḥ |

śītoṣṇasukhaduḥkheṣu samaḥ saṅgavivarjitaḥ ||12-18||

tulyanindāstutirmaunī santuṣṭo yena kenacit |

aniketaḥ sthiramatirbhaktimānme priyo naraḥ ||12-19||

Translation

Swami Tejomayananda did not comment on this sloka He to whom censure and praise are alike, who is silent, who is content with even little, who is homeless—that devotee of steady intellect is dear to Me.

bhaktiyoga

śloka 20

ye tu dharmyāmṛtamidaṃ yathoktaṃ paryupāsate |

śraddadhānā matparamā bhaktāste'tīva me priyāḥ ||12-20||

Translation

Those devotees who are full of faith and regard Me alone as the supreme goal, and who follow this Dharma-filled nectar described above—that is, the Dharma-filled life—they are exceedingly dear to Me.
