viśvarūpadarśanayoga
athaikādaśo'dhyāyaḥ
śloka 1
arjuna uvāca |
madanugrahāya paramaṃ guhyamadhyātmasaṃjñitam |
yattvayoktaṃ vacastena moho'yaṃ vigato mama ||11-1||
Translation
Arjuna said: The supremely secret words concerning the Self that You have spoken for my benefit have dispelled my delusion.
śloka 2
bhavāpyayau hi bhūtānāṃ śrutau vistaraśo mayā |
tvattaḥ kamalapatrākṣa māhātmyamapi cāvyayam ||11-2||
Translation
O lotus-eyed one! I have heard from You in detail about the origin and dissolution of beings, and also about Your imperishable majesty (and power).
śloka 3
evametadyathāttha tvamātmānaṃ parameśvara |
draṣṭumicchāmi te rūpamaiśvaraṃ puruṣottama ||11-3||
Translation
O Supreme Lord! As You describe Yourself, so it is indeed. (But) O Purushottama! I wish to behold Your divine form directly.
śloka 4
manyase yadi tacchakyaṃ mayā draṣṭumiti prabho |
yogeśvara tato me tvaṃ darśayātmānamavyayam ||11-4||
Translation
O Lord! If You deem it possible for that form of Yours to be seen by me, then O Lord of Yoga! Show me Your imperishable form.
śloka 5
śrībhagavānuvāca |
paśya me pārtha rūpāṇi śataśo'tha sahasraśaḥ |
nānāvidhāni divyāni nānāvarṇākṛtīni ca ||11-5||
Translation
The blessed Bhagavan said: O Partha! Behold My hundreds and thousands of divine forms of various kinds and of various colours and shapes.
śloka 6
paśyādityānvasūnrudrānaśvinau marutastathā |
bahūnyadṛṣṭapūrvāṇi paśyāścaryāṇi bhārata ||11-6||
Translation
O Bharata! Behold (in Me) the Adityas, Vasus, Rudras, the Ashvini Kumaras and the Maruts, and many other wonders never seen before.
śloka 7
ihaikasthaṃ jagatkṛtsnaṃ paśyādya sacarācaram |
mama dehe guḍākeśa yaccānyad draṣṭumicchasi ||11-7||
Translation
O Gudakesha! Now behold in this body of Mine the entire world with moving and unmoving beings gathered in one place, and whatever else you wish to see.
śloka 8
na tu māṃ śakyase draṣṭumanenaiva svacakṣuṣā |
divyaṃ dadāmi te cakṣuḥ paśya me yogamaiśvaram ||11-8||
Translation
But you are not able to behold Me with these (ordinary) eyes of yours; (therefore) I give you the divine eye, so that you may behold My divine Yoga.
śloka 9
sañjaya uvāca |
evamuktvā tato rājanmahāyogeśvaro hariḥ |
darśayāmāsa pārthāya paramaṃ rūpamaiśvaram ||11-9||
Translation
Sanjaya said: O king! Having spoken thus, the great Lord of Yoga, Hari, then showed Arjuna His form endowed with supreme majesty.
śloka 10 and 11
anekavaktranayanamanekādbhutadarśanam |
anekadivyābharaṇaṃ divyānekodyatāyudham ||11-10||
divyamālyāmbaradharaṃ divyagandhānulepanam |
sarvāścaryamayaṃ devamanantaṃ viśvatomukham ||11-11||
Translation
That form with many mouths and eyes, with many wondrous sights, adorned with many divine ornaments and bearing many divine weapons uplifted in hand. Wearing divine garlands and garments, anointed with divine fragrance, and endowed with every kind of wonder—the infinite, all-facing (cosmic form), the supreme Deva (Arjuna beheld).
śloka 12
divi sūryasahasrasya bhavedyugapadutthitā |
yadi bhāḥ sadṛśī sā syādbhāsastasya mahātmanaḥ ||11-12||
Translation
The radiance that would arise from a thousand suns rising together in the sky would be comparable to the radiance of that (cosmic form) supreme Self.
śloka 13
tatraikasthaṃ jagatkṛtsnaṃ pravibhaktamanekadhā |
apaśyaddevadevasya śarīre pāṇḍavastadā ||11-13||
Translation
At that moment, Arjuna, son of Pandu, beheld the entire world in its manifold divisions gathered in one place within the body of Sri Krishna, the deva of devas.
śloka 14
tataḥ sa vismayāviṣṭo hṛṣṭaromā dhanañjayaḥ |
praṇamya śirasā devaṃ kṛtāñjalirabhāṣata ||11-14||
Translation
Thereafter, Arjuna Dhananjaya, filled with wonder and with hair standing on end (experiencing thrill), bowed his head in obeisance to the cosmic-form Deva and, with joined hands, spoke.
śloka 15
arjuna uvāca |
paśyāmi devāṃstava deva dehe
sarvāṃstathā bhūtaviśeṣasaṅghān |
brahmāṇamīśaṃ kamalāsanastha-
mṛṣīṃśca sarvānuragāṃśca divyān ||11-15||
Translation
Arjuna said: O Deva! I behold in Your body all the devas, hosts of various beings, and Brahma the Lord of creation seated on the lotus, the sages, and the divine serpents.
śloka 16
anekabāhūdaravaktranetraṃ
paśyāmi tvāṃ sarvato'nantarūpam |
nāntaṃ na madhyaṃ na punastavādiṃ
paśyāmi viśveśvara viśvarūpa ||11-16||
Translation
O Lord of the universe! I behold You with many arms, bellies, mouths and eyes, with infinite forms on all sides. O cosmic form! I see neither Your end, nor Your middle, nor Your beginning.
śloka 17
kirīṭinaṃ gadinaṃ cakriṇaṃ ca
tejorāśiṃ sarvato dīptimantam |
paśyāmi tvāṃ durnirīkṣyaṃ samantād
dīptānalārkadyutimaprameyam ||11-17||
Translation
I behold You crowned, bearing the mace and the discus, a mass of blazing radiance on all sides, luminous like blazing fire and the sun, exceedingly difficult to behold and immeasurable in form.
śloka 18
tvamakṣaraṃ paramaṃ veditavyaṃ
tvamasya viśvasya paraṃ nidhānam |
tvamavyayaḥ śāśvatadharmagoptā
sanātanastvaṃ puruṣo mato me ||11-18||
Translation
You alone are the supreme imperishable to be known; You alone are the supreme refuge of this universe! You alone are the protector of eternal Dharma and You alone are the eternal Purusha—such is my conviction.
śloka 19
anādimadhyāntamanantavīrya-
manantabāhuṃ śaśisūryanetram |
paśyāmi tvāṃ dīptahutāśavaktraṃ
svatejasā viśvamidaṃ tapantam ||11-19||
Translation
I behold You without beginning, middle or end, endowed with infinite power and infinite arms, with eyes like the moon and sun, with faces like blazing fire, scorching this universe with Your radiance.
śloka 20
dyāvāpṛthivyoridamantaraṃ hi
vyāptaṃ tvayaikena diśaśca sarvāḥ |
dṛṣṭvādbhutaṃ rūpamugraṃ tavedaṃ
lokatrayaṃ pravyathitaṃ mahātman ||11-20||
Translation
O great-souled one! This space between heaven and earth and all the directions are pervaded by You alone; beholding this wondrous and fierce form of Yours, the three worlds are overcome with great distress (and fear).
śloka 21
amī hi tvāṃ surasaṅghā viśanti
kecidbhītāḥ prāñjalayo gṛṇanti |
svastītyuktvā maharṣisiddhasaṅghāḥ
stuvanti tvāṃ stutibhiḥ puṣkalābhiḥ ||11-21||
Translation
All these hosts of devas are entering into You, and many, filled with fear, offer praise to You with joined hands; the hosts of great sages and Siddhas, saying 'May there be welfare' (uttering benedictions), praise You through the best (or complete) hymns.
śloka 22
rudrādityā vasavo ye ca sādhyā
viśve'śvinau marutaścoṣmapāśca |
gandharvayakṣāsurasiddhasaṅghā
vīkṣante tvāṃ vismitāścaiva sarve ||11-22||
Translation
The Rudras, Adityas, Vasus, Sadhyas, Vishvedevas, the two Ashvini Kumaras, the Maruts, Ushmapas, Gandharvas, Yakshas, Asuras and the hosts of Siddhas—all of them behold You with wonder.
śloka 23
rūpaṃ mahatte bahuvaktranetraṃ
mahābāho bahubāhūrupādam |
bahūdaraṃ bahudaṃṣṭrākarālaṃ
dṛṣṭvā lokāḥ pravyathitāstathāham ||11-23||
Translation
O mighty-armed one! Beholding Your great form with many mouths and eyes, many arms, thighs and feet, many bellies and many terrible fangs, all people are distressed, and so am I (agitated).
śloka 24
nabhaḥspṛśaṃ dīptamanekavarṇaṃ
vyāttānanaṃ dīptaviśālanetram |
dṛṣṭvā hi tvāṃ pravyathitāntarātmā
dhṛtiṃ na vindāmi śamaṃ ca viṣṇo ||11-24||
Translation
O Vishnu! Beholding You touching the sky, blazing with many forms, with gaping mouths and vast luminous eyes, I am filled with fear and cannot attain composure and peace.
śloka 25
daṃṣṭrākarālāni ca te mukhāni
dṛṣṭvaiva kālānalasannibhāni |
diśo na jāne na labhe ca śarma
prasīda deveśa jagannivāsa ||11-25||
Translation
Beholding Your mouths with terrible fangs, blazing like the fire of dissolution, I can neither discern the directions nor attain peace; therefore O Lord of devas! O abode of the world! Be pleased.
śloka 26 and 27
amī ca tvāṃ dhṛtarāṣṭrasya putrāḥ
sarve sahaivāvanipālasaṅghaiḥ |
bhīṣmo droṇaḥ sūtaputrastathāsau
sahāsmadīyairapi yodhamukhyaiḥ ||11-26||
vaktrāṇi te tvaramāṇā viśanti
daṃṣṭrākarālāni bhayānakāni |
kecidvilagnā daśanāntareṣu
sandṛśyante cūrṇitairuttamāṅgaiḥ ||11-27||
Translation
And all these sons of Dhritarashtra together with the hosts of kings are entering into You. Bhishma, Drona and Karna, along with the chief warriors of our side as well. They rush with fierce speed into Your terrible mouths with dreadful fangs, and many are seen caught between Your teeth with their heads crushed.
śloka 28
yathā nadīnāṃ bahavo'mbuvegāḥ
samudramevābhimukhā dravanti |
tathā tavāmī naralokavīrā
viśanti vaktrāṇyabhivijvalanti ||11-28||
Translation
As many streams of water flow swiftly toward the ocean, so do these heroic warriors of the human world enter into Your blazing mouths.
śloka 29
yathā pradīptaṃ jvalanaṃ pataṅgā
viśanti nāśāya samṛddhavegāḥ |
tathaiva nāśāya viśanti lokās-
tavāpi vaktrāṇi samṛddhavegāḥ ||11-29||
Translation
As moths rush with great speed into blazing fire for their destruction, so too do these people rush with great speed into Your mouths for their destruction.
śloka 30
lelihyase grasamānaḥ samantāl-
lokānsamagrānvadanairjvaladbhiḥ |
tejobhirāpūrya jagatsamagraṃ
bhāsastavogrāḥ pratapanti viṣṇo ||11-30||
Translation
O Vishnu! You are devouring all these worlds with Your blazing mouths, and Your fierce radiance is filling the entire world with splendour and scorching it.
śloka 31
ākhyāhi me ko bhavānugrarūpo
namo'stu te devavara prasīda |
vijñātumicchāmi bhavantamādyaṃ
na hi prajānāmi tava pravṛttim ||11-31||
Translation
(Please) tell me, who are You of this fierce form? O best of devas! Salutations to You, be pleased. I wish to know You in Your primal form (in truth), for I cannot comprehend Your purpose.
śloka 32
śrībhagavānuvāca |
kālo'smi lokakṣayakṛtpravṛddho
lokānsamāhartumiha pravṛttaḥ |
ṛte'pi tvāṃ na bhaviṣyanti sarve
ye'vasthitāḥ pratyanīkeṣu yodhāḥ ||11-32||
Translation
The blessed Bhagavan said: I am mighty Time, the destroyer of worlds. At this moment, I am engaged in destroying these worlds. The warriors arrayed in the enemy army will not survive even without you.
śloka 33
tasmāttvamuttiṣṭha yaśo labhasva
jitvā śatrūn bhuṅkṣva rājyaṃ samṛddham |
mayaivaite nihatāḥ pūrvameva
nimittamātraṃ bhava savyasācin ||11-33||
Translation
Therefore arise and gain glory; conquer the enemies and enjoy the prosperous kingdom. All these have already been slain by Me. O Savyasachin! Be you merely the instrument.
śloka 34
droṇaṃ ca bhīṣmaṃ ca jayadrathaṃ ca
karṇaṃ tathānyānapi yodhavīrān |
mayā hatāṃstvaṃ jahi mā vyathiṣṭhā
yudhyasva jetāsi raṇe sapatnān ||11-34||
Translation
Slay Drona, Bhishma, Jayadratha, Karna and the many other heroic warriors already slain by Me; fear not; fight; you shall conquer the enemies in battle.
śloka 35
sañjaya uvāca |
etacchrutvā vacanaṃ keśavasya
kṛtāñjalirvepamānaḥ kirīṭī |
namaskṛtvā bhūya evāha kṛṣṇaṃ
sagadgadaṃ bhītabhītaḥ praṇamya ||11-35||
Translation
Sanjaya said: Hearing this word of Bhagavan Keshava, the crowned Arjuna, with joined hands and trembling, offered obeisance and spoke to Sri Krishna again in a voice choked with emotion.
śloka 36
arjuna uvāca |
sthāne hṛṣīkeśa tava prakīrtyā
jagatprahṛṣyatyanurajyate ca |
rakṣāṃsi bhītāni diśo dravanti
sarve namasyanti ca siddhasaṅghāḥ ||11-36||
Translation
Arjuna said: It is fitting that the world is greatly delighted by Your praise and attains devotion as well. The terrified Rakshasas flee in all directions, and the hosts of all Siddhas offer obeisance to You.
śloka 37
kasmācca te na nameranmahātman
garīyase brahmaṇo'pyādikartre |
ananta deveśa jagannivāsa
tvamakṣaraṃ sadasattatparaṃ yat ||11-37||
Translation
O great-souled one! How could they not offer obeisance to You, who are the primal agent even of Brahma and the supreme? (For) O infinite one! O Lord of devas! O abode of the world! You alone are the imperishable Reality that is beyond both the existent and the non-existent.
śloka 38
tvamādidevaḥ puruṣaḥ purāṇas-
tvamasya viśvasya paraṃ nidhānam |
vettāsi vedyaṃ ca paraṃ ca dhāma
tvayā tataṃ viśvamanantarūpa ||11-38||
Translation
You are the primal Deva and the ancient (eternal) Purusha. You are the supreme refuge of this world, the knower, the knowable, and the supreme abode. O infinite form! This universe is pervaded by You alone.
śloka 39
vāyuryamo'gnirvaruṇaḥ śaśāṅkaḥ
prajāpatistvaṃ prapitāmahaśca |
namo namaste'stu sahasrakṛtvaḥ
punaśca bhūyo'pi namo namaste ||11-39||
Translation
You are Vayu, Yama, Agni, Varuna, the Moon, Prajapati (Brahma) and the great-grandfather (the cause even of Brahma); salutations to You a thousand times, again and again salutations, salutations to You.
śloka 40
namaḥ purastādatha pṛṣṭhataste
namo'stu te sarvata eva sarva |
anantavīryāmitavikramastvaṃ
sarvaṃ samāpnoṣi tato'si sarvaḥ ||11-40||
Translation
O Bhagavan of infinite power! Salutations to You from the front and from behind, O all-pervading Self! Salutations to You from all sides. You are of immeasurable prowess and You pervade all; therefore You are the form of all.
śloka 41 and 42
sakheti matvā prasabhaṃ yaduktaṃ
he kṛṣṇa he yādava he sakheti |
ajānatā mahimānaṃ tavedaṃ
mayā pramādātpraṇayena vāpi ||11-41||
yaccāvahāsārthamasatkṛto'si
vihāraśayyāsanabhojaneṣu |
eko'thavāpyacyuta tatsamakṣaṃ
tatkṣāmaye tvāmahamaprameyam ||11-42||
Translation
O Bhagavan! Regarding You as a friend, not knowing this glory of Yours, whatever was said by me through negligence or even through affection—'O Krishna! O Yadava! O friend!'—in such manner. And, O Achyuta! For all those ways in which You were slighted by me in jest—during recreation, rest, sitting or meals, alone or in the presence of others—I beg forgiveness from You of immeasurable form.
śloka 43
pitāsi lokasya carācarasya
tvamasya pūjyaśca gururgarīyān |
na tvatsamo'styabhyadhikaḥ kuto'nyo
lokatraye'pyapratimaprabhāva ||11-43||
Translation
You are the father of this world of moving and unmoving beings, the worthy of worship and the supreme Guru. O Bhagavan of incomparable majesty! In the three worlds there is none equal to You, so how could there be one greater than You?
śloka 44
tasmātpraṇamya praṇidhāya kāyaṃ
prasādaye tvāmahamīśamīḍyam |
piteva putrasya sakheva sakhyuḥ
priyaḥ priyāyārhasi deva soḍhum ||11-44||
Translation
Therefore, O Bhagavan! I prostrate before You with my body in full obeisance and pray that You, the Lord worthy of praise, be pleased. O Deva! As a father forgives his son, a friend his friend, and a beloved his beloved (their faults), so do You too forgive my offences.
śloka 45
adṛṣṭapūrvaṃ hṛṣito'smi dṛṣṭvā
bhayena ca pravyathitaṃ mano me |
tadeva me darśaya deva rūpaṃ
prasīda deveśa jagannivāsa ||11-45||
Translation
I am delighted to behold this unseen-before form of Yours, and yet my mind is also greatly agitated with fear. Therefore, O Deva! Show me that same form as before. O Lord of devas! O abode of the world! Be pleased.
śloka 46
kirīṭinaṃ gadinaṃ cakrahastaṃ
icchāmi tvāṃ draṣṭumahaṃ tathaiva |
tenaiva rūpeṇa caturbhujena
sahasrabāho bhava viśvamūrte ||11-46||
Translation
I wish to see You in that same form—crowned, holding the mace and discus in hand. O form of the world! O thousand-armed one! Assume that four-armed form.
śloka 47
śrībhagavānuvāca |
mayā prasannena tavārjunedaṃ
rūpaṃ paraṃ darśitamātmayogāt |
tejomayaṃ viśvamanantamādyaṃ
yanme tvadanyena na dṛṣṭapūrvam ||11-47||
Translation
O Arjuna! Being pleased with you, I have shown you this My supreme form of blazing radiance, the beginning and infinite cosmic form of all, through the power of My Yoga—which none before you has seen.
śloka 48
na vedayajñādhyayanairna dānair-
na ca kriyābhirna tapobhirugraiḥ |
evaṃrūpaḥ śakya ahaṃ nṛloke
draṣṭuṃ tvadanyena kurupravīra ||11-48||
Translation
O hero of the Kurus! Other than you, no one in this human world can behold Me in this form—neither by study of the Vedas, nor by sacrifice, nor by charity, nor by (religious) rites, nor by severe austerities.
śloka 49
mā te vyathā mā ca vimūḍhabhāvo
dṛṣṭvā rūpaṃ ghoramīdṛṅmamedam |
vyapetabhīḥ prītamanāḥ punastvaṃ
tadeva me rūpamidaṃ prapaśya ||11-49||
Translation
Do not be distressed or confused by beholding this terrible form of Mine. Be fearless and cheerful, and behold again that same (previous) form of Mine.
śloka 50
sañjaya uvāca |
ityarjunaṃ vāsudevastathoktvā
svakaṃ rūpaṃ darśayāmāsa bhūyaḥ |
āśvāsayāmāsa ca bhītamenaṃ
bhūtvā punaḥ saumyavapurmahātmā ||11-50||
Translation
Sanjaya said: Having spoken thus to Arjuna, Bhagavan Vasudeva again showed His (previous) form, and then the great-souled Sri Krishna manifested in His gentle form and reassured the frightened Arjuna.
śloka 51
arjuna uvāca |
dṛṣṭvedaṃ mānuṣaṃ rūpaṃ tava saumyaṃ janārdana |
idānīmasmi saṃvṛttaḥ sacetāḥ prakṛtiṃ gataḥ ||11-51||
Translation
Arjuna said: O Janardana! Beholding this gentle human form of Yours, I have now become composed and regained my natural state.
śloka 52
śrībhagavānuvāca |
sudurdarśamidaṃ rūpaṃ dṛṣṭavānasi yanmama |
devā apyasya rūpasya nityaṃ darśanakāṅkṣiṇaḥ ||11-52||
Translation
The blessed Bhagavan said: This form of Mine that you have seen is most difficult to behold. The devas too are ever eager to see this form.
śloka 53
nāhaṃ vedairna tapasā na dānena na cejyayā |
śakya evaṃvidho draṣṭuṃ dṛṣṭavānasi māṃ yathā ||11-53||
Translation
Neither by the Vedas, nor by austerity, nor by charity, nor by sacrifice can I be seen in this form as you have seen Me.
śloka 54
bhaktyā tvananyayā śakya ahamevaṃvidho'rjuna |
jñātuṃ draṣṭuṃ ca tattvena praveṣṭuṃ ca parantapa ||11-54||
Translation
But, O Parantapa Arjuna! By single-minded devotion I can be known in truth, seen, and entered into (attained with undivided mind)!
śloka 55
matkarmakṛnmatparamo madbhaktaḥ saṅgavarjitaḥ |
nirvairaḥ sarvabhūteṣu yaḥ sa māmeti pāṇḍava ||11-55||
Translation
O Pandava! He who performs action for Me alone, who regards Me as the supreme goal, who is My devotee, free from attachment, and who is devoid of enmity toward all beings—he attains Me.
