jñānavijñānayoga
atha saptamo'dhyāyaḥ
śloka 1
śrībhagavānuvāca |
mayyāsaktamanāḥ pārtha yogaṃ yuñjanmadāśrayaḥ |
asaṃśayaṃ samagraṃ māṃ yathā jñāsyasi tacchṛṇu ||7-1||
Translation
O Partha! Listen to how you shall know Me fully, without any doubt, with mind devoted to Me and taking refuge in Me, while practicing Yoga.
śloka 2
jñānaṃ te'haṃ savijñānamidaṃ vakṣyāmyaśeṣataḥ |
yajjñātvā neha bhūyo'nyajjñātavyamavaśiṣyate ||7-2||
Translation
I shall declare to you this knowledge together with wisdom in full; having known this, nothing more remains to be known here in this world.
śloka 3
manuṣyāṇāṃ sahasreṣu kaścidyatati siddhaye |
yatatāmapi siddhānāṃ kaścinmāṃ vetti tattvataḥ ||7-3||
Translation
Among thousands of men, scarcely one strives for perfection; and among those who strive, scarcely one knows Me in truth.
śloka 4
bhūmirāpo'nalo vāyuḥ khaṃ mano buddhireva ca |
ahaṃkāra itīyaṃ me bhinnā prakṛtiraṣṭadhā ||7-4||
Translation
Earth, water, fire, air and ether, as well as mind, intellect and ego—this is My Prakriti divided eightfold.
śloka 5
apareyamitastvanyāṃ prakṛtiṃ viddhi me parām |
jīvabhūtāṃ mahābāho yayedaṃ dhāryate jagat ||7-5||
Translation
O mighty-armed one! This is My lower Prakriti. Know My higher Prakriti to be different—the life-principle by which this world is sustained.
śloka 6
etadyonīni bhūtāni sarvāṇītyupadhāraya |
ahaṃ kṛtsnasya jagataḥ prabhavaḥ pralayastathā ||7-6||
Translation
Know that all beings arise from these two Prakritis. Therefore I am the source of origin and dissolution of the entire world.
śloka 7
mattaḥ parataraṃ nānyatkiñcidasti dhanañjaya |
mayi sarvamidaṃ protaṃ sūtre maṇigaṇā iva ||7-7||
Translation
O Dhananjaya! There is nothing whatsoever beyond Me. This entire world is strung on Me like gems on a thread.
śloka 8
raso'hamapsu kaunteya prabhāsmi śaśisūryayoḥ |
praṇavaḥ sarvavedeṣu śabdaḥ khe pauruṣaṃ nṛṣu ||7-8||
Translation
O Kaunteya! I am the taste in water, the light in the moon and the sun, the sacred syllable Om in all the Vedas, sound in ether, and manliness in men.
śloka 9
puṇyo gandhaḥ pṛthivyāṃ ca tejaścāsmi vibhāvasau |
jīvanaṃ sarvabhūteṣu tapaścāsmi tapasviṣu ||7-9||
Translation
I am the sacred fragrance in earth and the brilliance in fire; I am life in all beings and austerity in ascetics.
śloka 10
bījaṃ māṃ sarvabhūtānāṃ viddhi pārtha sanātanam |
buddhirbuddhimatāmasmi tejastejasvināmaham ||7-10||
Translation
O Partha! Know Me alone as the eternal seed of all beings; I am the intellect of the intellect and the splendour of the radiant.
śloka 11
balaṃ balavatāṃ cāhaṃ kāmarāgavivarjitam |
dharmāviruddho bhūteṣu kāmo'smi bharatarṣabha ||7-11||
Translation
O best of the Bharatas! I am the strength of the strong, free from desire and attachment; and I am desire in all beings that is not contrary to Dharma.
śloka 12
ye caiva sāttvikā bhāvā rājasāstāmasāśca ye |
matta eveti tānviddhi na tvahaṃ teṣu te mayi ||7-12||
Translation
Whatever states exist—Sattvic (pure), Rajasic (active) and Tamasic (inert)—know them all to arise from Me alone; yet I am not in them, they are in Me.
śloka 13
tribhirguṇamayairbhāvairebhiḥ sarvamidaṃ jagat |
mohitaṃ nābhijānāti māmebhyaḥ paramavyayam ||7-13||
Translation
Deluded by these states born of the three Gunas, the whole world does not know Me who am beyond them and imperishable.
śloka 14
daivī hyeṣā guṇamayī mama māyā duratyayā |
māmeva ye prapadyante māyāmetāṃ taranti te ||7-14||
Translation
This divine Maya of Mine, consisting of the three Gunas, is very difficult to overcome. But those who take refuge in Me cross beyond this Maya.
śloka 15
na māṃ duṣkṛtino mūḍhāḥ prapadyante narādhamāḥ |
māyayāpahṛtajñānā āsuraṃ bhāvamāśritāḥ ||7-15||
Translation
The evildoers, the deluded, the lowest of men do not worship Me; their knowledge is stolen by Maya, and they assume the demonic nature.
śloka 16
caturvidhā bhajante māṃ janāḥ sukṛtino'rjuna |
ārto jijñāsurarthārthī jñānī ca bharatarṣabha ||7-16||
Translation
O Arjuna, best of the Bharatas! Four types of virtuous men worship Me: the distressed, the seeker of knowledge, the seeker of wealth, and the wise.
śloka 17
teṣāṃ jñānī nityayukta ekabhaktirviśiṣyate |
priyo hi jñānino'tyarthamahaṃ sa ca mama priyaḥ ||7-17||
Translation
Of these, the wise one who is ever united with Me and has single-minded devotion is the best; for I am exceedingly dear to the wise, and he is exceedingly dear to Me.
śloka 18
udārāḥ sarva evaite jñānī tvātmaiva me matam |
āsthitaḥ sa hi yuktātmā māmevānuttamāṃ gatim ||7-18||
Translation
(Although) all these are excellent, yet the wise man is My very Self—such is My view; for he, the wise man of steady intellect, is well established in Me as the supreme goal.
śloka 19
bahūnāṃ janmanāmante jñānavānmāṃ prapadyate |
vāsudevaḥ sarvamiti sa mahātmā sudurlabhaḥ ||7-19||
Translation
At the end of many births, the wise devotee attains Me, having gained the knowledge that 'all this is Vasudeva'; such a great soul is very rare.
śloka 20
kāmaistaistairhṛtajñānāḥ prapadyante'nyadevatāḥ |
taṃ taṃ niyamamāsthāya prakṛtyā niyatāḥ svayā ||7-20||
Translation
Those whose knowledge has been carried away by desire for particular enjoyments worship other deities, impelled by their own nature, following their respective rules.
śloka 21
yo yo yāṃ yāṃ tanuṃ bhaktaḥ śraddhayārcitumicchati |
tasya tasyācalāṃ śraddhāṃ tāmeva vidadhāmyaham ||7-21||
Translation
Whatever form a devotee desires to worship with faith—I make that devotee's faith steadfast in that very form.
śloka 22
sa tayā śraddhayā yuktastasyārādhanamīhate |
labhate ca tataḥ kāmānmayaiva vihitānhi tān ||7-22||
Translation
Endowed with that faith, he worships that deity and obtains the desired enjoyments that are ordained by Me.
śloka 23
antavattu phalaṃ teṣāṃ tadbhavatyalpamedhasām |
devāndevayajo yānti madbhaktā yānti māmapi ||7-23||
Translation
But that fruit of those men of limited understanding is perishable. The worshippers of the deities go to the deities; My devotees come to Me alone.
śloka 24
avyaktaṃ vyaktimāpannaṃ manyante māmabuddhayaḥ |
paraṃ bhāvamajānanto mamāvyayamanuttamam ||7-24||
Translation
Men of dull intellect, not knowing My supreme immutable nature, regard Me, the unmanifest, as having manifest form.
śloka 25
nāhaṃ prakāśaḥ sarvasya yogamāyāsamāvṛtaḥ |
mūḍho'yaṃ nābhijānāti loko māmajamavyayam ||7-25||
Translation
Veiled by My Yoga Maya, I am not manifest to all. This deluded world does not know Me who am beyond birth and indestructible.
śloka 26
vedāhaṃ samatītāni vartamānāni cārjuna |
bhaviṣyāṇi ca bhūtāni māṃ tu veda na kaścana ||7-26||
Translation
O Arjuna! I know all beings—those that have passed, those that exist in the present, and those that are to come; but no one knows Me.
śloka 27
icchādveṣasamutthena dvandvamohena bhārata |
sarvabhūtāni sammohaṃ sarge yānti parantapa ||7-27||
Translation
O scorcher of foes, descendant of Bharata! All beings are overcome by delusion arising from the pairs of opposites born of desire and aversion.
śloka 28
yeṣāṃ tvantagataṃ pāpaṃ janānāṃ puṇyakarmaṇām |
te dvandvamohanirmuktā bhajante māṃ dṛḍhavratāḥ ||7-28||
Translation
But those men of virtuous deeds whose sins have been destroyed, freed from the delusion of the pairs of opposites, worship Me with firm resolve.
