rājavidyā rājaguhyayoga
atha navamo'dhyāyaḥ
śloka 1
śrībhagavānuvāca |
idaṃ tu te guhyatamaṃ pravakṣyāmyanasūyave |
jñānaṃ vijñānasahitaṃ yajjñātvā mokṣyase'śubhāt ||9-1||
Translation
Shri Bhagavan said: To you who are without fault-finding I shall declare this most secret knowledge together with wisdom; knowing which you shall be freed from inauspicious worldly bondage.
śloka 2
rājavidyā rājaguhyaṃ pavitramidamuttamam |
pratyakṣāvagamaṃ dharmyaṃ susukhaṃ kartumavyayam ||9-2||
Translation
This knowledge is the sovereign of all knowledge and the sovereign of all secrets; it is pure, excellent, conducive to direct realization, in accord with Dharma, easy to practice, and imperishable.
śloka 3
aśraddadhānāḥ puruṣā dharmasyāsya parantapa |
aprāpya māṃ nivartante mṛtyusaṃsāravartmani ||9-3||
Translation
O scorcher of foes! Men without faith in this Dharma, not attaining Me, wander in the world that is death.
śloka 4
mayā tatamidaṃ sarvaṃ jagadavyaktamūrtinā |
matsthāni sarvabhūtāni na cāhaṃ teṣvavasthitaḥ ||9-4||
Translation
This entire world is pervaded by My unmanifest form; all beings abide in Me, but I do not abide in them.
śloka 5
na ca matsthāni bhūtāni paśya me yogamaiśvaram |
bhūtabhṛnna ca bhūtastho mamātmā bhūtabhāvanaḥ ||9-5||
Translation
And in truth, all beings do not abide in Me; behold My divine Yoga—My Self which sustains and produces all beings does not abide in those beings.
śloka 6
yathākāśasthito nityaṃ vāyuḥ sarvatrago mahān |
tathā sarvāṇi bhūtāni matsthānītyupadhāraya ||9-6||
Translation
As the great wind moving everywhere ever abides in space, so know that all beings abide in Me.
śloka 7
sarvabhūtāni kaunteya prakṛtiṃ yānti māmikām |
kalpakṣaye punastāni kalpādau visṛjāmyaham ||9-7||
Translation
O Kaunteya! At the end of a kalpa all beings merge into My Prakriti; and at the beginning of the next kalpa I create them again.
śloka 8 and 9
prakṛtiṃ svāmavaṣṭabhya visṛjāmi punaḥ punaḥ |
bhūtagrāmamimaṃ kṛtsnamavaśaṃ prakṛtervaśāt ||9-8||
na ca māṃ tāni karmāṇi nibadhnanti dhanañjaya |
udāsīnavadāsīnamasaktaṃ teṣu karmasu ||9-9||
Translation
Having brought Prakriti under My control, I create this entire multitude of beings again and again, compelled by their own nature. O Dhananjaya! Those actions do not bind Me, the Supreme Self, who am unattached to them and remain as if indifferent.
śloka 10
mayādhyakṣeṇa prakṛtiḥ sūyate sacarācaram |
hetunānena kaunteya jagadviparivartate ||9-10||
Translation
O Kaunteya! Under My supervision, Prakriti produces the world of moving and unmoving beings; therefore this world revolves.
śloka 11
avajānanti māṃ mūḍhā mānuṣīṃ tanumāśritam |
paraṃ bhāvamajānanto mama bhūtamaheśvaram ||9-11||
Translation
Not knowing My supreme nature as the great Lord of all beings, the deluded despise Me who have assumed a human body.
śloka 12
moghāśā moghakarmāṇo moghajñānā vicetasaḥ |
rākṣasīmāsurīṃ caiva prakṛtiṃ mohinīṃ śritāḥ ||9-12||
Translation
Those of vain hopes, vain actions and vain knowledge, the undiscerning, assume the nature of demons and Asuras that deludes.
śloka 13
mahātmānastu māṃ pārtha daivīṃ prakṛtimāśritāḥ |
bhajantyananyamanaso jñātvā bhūtādimavyayam ||9-13||
Translation
O Partha! But the great souls who take refuge in the divine nature, knowing Me as the primal cause of all beings and of imperishable form, worship Me with single-minded devotion.
śloka 14
satataṃ kīrtayanto māṃ yatantaśca dṛḍhavratāḥ |
namasyantaśca māṃ bhaktyā nityayuktā upāsate ||9-14||
Translation
Constantly glorifying Me, striving, and firm in their vows, they worship Me with devotion, offering obeisance and ever united with Me.
śloka 15
jñānayajñena cāpyanye yajanto māmupāsate |
ekatvena pṛthaktvena bahudhā viśvatomukham ||9-15||
Translation
Some worship Me through the sacrifice of knowledge with the feeling of unity; some with a sense of separation; some worship Me in My cosmic form in many ways.
śloka 16
ahaṃ kraturahaṃ yajñaḥ svadhāhamahamauṣadham |
mantro'hamahamevājyamahamagnirahaṃ hutam ||9-16||
Translation
I am the ritual; I am the sacrifice; I am the offering to the ancestors and the herb; I am the mantra; I am the clarified butter; I am the fire; and I am the oblation.
śloka 17
pitāhamasya jagato mātā dhātā pitāmahaḥ |
vedyaṃ pavitramoṃkāra ṛksāma yajureva ca ||9-17||
Translation
I alone am the father, mother, sustainer and grandsire of this world. I am the object of knowledge, the sacred syllable Om, and the Rig, Sama and Yajur Vedas.
śloka 18
gatirbhartā prabhuḥ sākṣī nivāsaḥ śaraṇaṃ suhṛt |
prabhavaḥ pralayaḥ sthānaṃ nidhānaṃ bījamavyayam ||9-18||
Translation
I am the goal, the sustainer, the lord, the witness, the abode, the refuge, the friend; I am the origin, dissolution, foundation, treasure-house and imperishable cause.
śloka 19
tapāmyahamahaṃ varṣaṃ nigṛhṇāmyutsṛjāmi ca |
amṛtaṃ caiva mṛtyuśca sadasaccāhamarjuna ||9-19||
Translation
O Arjuna! I alone give heat (as the sun); I withhold and release the rain. I am immortality and death, as well as the real and the unreal.
śloka 20
traividyā māṃ somapāḥ pūtapāpā
yajñairiṣṭvā svargatiṃ prārthayante |
te puṇyamāsādya surendraloka-
maśnanti divyāndivi devabhogān ||9-20||
Translation
Those who know the three Vedas, drink the Soma and are purified of sin, worship Me through sacrifice desiring heaven; they attain the realm of Indra as the fruit of their merit and enjoy the celestial pleasures of the gods in heaven.
śloka 21
te taṃ bhuktvā svargalokaṃ viśālaṃ
kṣīṇe puṇye martyalokaṃ viśanti |
evaṃ trayīdharmamanuprapannā
gatāgataṃ kāmakāmā labhante ||9-21||
Translation
Having enjoyed that vast heavenly realm, their merit exhausted, they return to the world of mortals. Thus those who take refuge in the actions prescribed in the three Vedas and desire enjoyments attain the cycle of birth and death.
śloka 22
ananyāścintayanto māṃ ye janāḥ paryupāsate |
teṣāṃ nityābhiyuktānāṃ yogakṣemaṃ vahāmyaham ||9-22||
Translation
To those devotees who worship Me alone with single-minded contemplation—I carry what they lack and preserve what they have.
śloka 23
ye'pyanyadevatā bhaktā yajante śraddhayānvitāḥ |
te'pi māmeva kaunteya yajantyavidhipūrvakam ||9-23||
Translation
O Kaunteya! Those devotees endowed with faith who worship other deities—they too worship Me alone, though not according to the prescribed method.
śloka 24
ahaṃ hi sarvayajñānāṃ bhoktā ca prabhureva ca |
na tu māmabhijānanti tattvenātaścyavanti te ||9-24||
Translation
Because I alone am the enjoyer and lord of all sacrifices, but they do not know Me in truth, therefore they fall, that is, they attain the world of transmigration.
śloka 25
yānti devavratā devānpitṝnyānti pitṛvratāḥ |
bhūtāni yānti bhūtejyā yānti madyājino'pi mām ||9-25||
Translation
Worshippers of the devas attain the devas; worshippers of the ancestors go to the ancestors; those who propitiate the spirits attain the spirits; and those devotees who worship Me attain Me alone.
śloka 26
patraṃ puṣpaṃ phalaṃ toyaṃ yo me bhaktyā prayacchati |
tadahaṃ bhaktyupahṛtamaśnāmi prayatātmanaḥ ||9-26||
Translation
Whatever devotee offers Me with devotion a leaf, flower, fruit, water and the like, I accept and partake of that devotionally offered offering (leaf, flower and so forth) of that pure-minded devotee.
śloka 27
yatkaroṣi yadaśnāsi yajjuhoṣi dadāsi yat |
yattapasyasi kaunteya tatkuruṣva madarpaṇam ||9-27||
Translation
O son of Kunti! Whatever action you perform, whatever you eat, whatever you offer in sacrifice, whatever you give in charity, and whatever austerity you practise—offer all of that to Me.
śloka 28
śubhāśubhaphalairevaṃ mokṣyase karmabandhanaiḥ |
saṃnyāsayogayuktātmā vimukto māmupaiṣyasi ||9-28||
Translation
Thus you shall be freed from the bonds of action arising from auspicious and inauspicious fruits; and with mind united in the Yoga of renunciation, liberated, you shall attain Me alone.
śloka 29
samo'haṃ sarvabhūteṣu na me dveṣyo'sti na priyaḥ |
ye bhajanti tu māṃ bhaktyā mayi te teṣu cāpyaham ||9-29||
Translation
I am the same toward all beings; none is hateful to Me nor dear; but those who worship Me with devotion—they abide in Me and I too abide in them.
śloka 30
api cetsudurācāro bhajate māmananyabhāk |
sādhureva sa mantavyaḥ samyagvyavasito hi saḥ ||9-30||
Translation
Even if one who is exceedingly wicked worships Me with single-minded devotion, he is to be regarded as a saint, for he has made the right resolve.
śloka 31
kṣipraṃ bhavati dharmātmā śaśvacchāntiṃ nigacchati |
kaunteya pratijānīhi na me bhaktaḥ praṇaśyati ||9-31||
Translation
O son of Kunti, he soon becomes righteous and attains everlasting peace. Know for certain that My devotee is never destroyed.
śloka 32
māṃ hi pārtha vyapāśritya ye'pi syuḥ pāpayonayaḥ |
striyo vaiśyāstathā śūdrāste'pi yānti parāṃ gatim ||9-32||
Translation
O Partha! Even those born in lowly wombs—women, Vaishyas and Shudras—attain the supreme goal by taking refuge in Me.
śloka 33
kiṃ punarbrāhmaṇāḥ puṇyā bhaktā rājarṣayastathā |
anityamasukhaṃ lokamimaṃ prāpya bhajasva mām ||9-33||
Translation
What need to say that virtuous Brahmanas and royal sages who are devotees (attain the supreme goal); (therefore) having attained this impermanent and joyless world, (now) worship Me alone with devotion.
śloka 34
manmanā bhava madbhakto madyājī māṃ namaskuru |
māmevaiṣyasi yuktvaivamātmānaṃ matparāyaṇaḥ ||9-34||
Translation
Fix your mind on Me; be My devotee and My worshipper; offer obeisance to Me; thus, being devoted to Me alone (that is, having Me as your supreme goal), unite your soul with Me and you shall attain Me alone.
